UVB (burning) rays are strongest in summer in the middle of the day and are what causes sunburn – a major risk factor for skin cancer. UVA (aging) rays of the sun which are constant throughout the year and the day and can even penetrate glass (can reach indoors). The ESK Range has been designed to suit a variety of skin types from normal skin to sensitive skin to aging skin. The core range of 5 products can be adapted to suit your individual needs.

ESK products are formulated based on scientific studies that are peer-reviewed and published in major medical journals. We only use ingredients and formulations which have been proven repeatedly in independent clinical trials to reduce the signs of aging, protect, smooth and nourish your skin, so you can put your best face forward.

The face creams and serums are pH balanced and use the exact ingredients that have shown to work – not the cheaper, less effective versions.

The result is an evidence-based skin care range that works, without the hype. You’ll see the difference. It’s skin care that simply works.

Vitamin A: Retinal (or Retinaldehyde)

Vitamin A has the most and strongest evidence for reducing the signs of skin aging (1). It has been shown to stimulate skin cell growth and collagen production (2). Retinal is the most effective and least irritating from of Vitamin A (1) (Other commonly used forms of Vitamin A including Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate have weak or no evidence). It reduces the appearance of fine lines and pigmentation and increases skin elasticity and is also useful in managing acne (3).

Vitamin B3: Niacinamide

An Anti-Oxidant, assists in repair of cell DNA. Improves skin barrier function (1) (decreases moisture loss), increases skin elasticity (2) and reduces pigmentation and skin yellowing (3).

Vitamin C: L-Ascoric Acid

An anti-oxidant, that protects from sun induced UV damage and premature aging. It reduces wrinkles (2), fine lines, skin roughness and pigmentation (3). L-Ascorbic acid is naturally unstable and must be formulated in an oil base in order to delay oxidisation. Poorly formulated L-Ascorbic Acid products will prematurely oxidise (becoming dark orange or brown) and will be at best ineffective and may possibly accelerate skin aging. Stabilised forms of Vitamin C are often used for convenience, however they have weak or no evidence (4).

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Improves skin texture and tone (1) through exfoliation. Helps remove dead skin cells on the surface and promotes skin cell growth (2). There are a number of alpha hydroxy acids, with Glycolic acid having the smallest molecular structure. There is a trade-off between effectiveness and irritation with Glycolic acid being the most effective and potentially the most irritating. Glycolic acid has been shown to improve the penetration and effectiveness of other active ingredients (eg. Retinal) (3). Furthermore, concentrations of Alpha Hydroxy Acids that are too high require incorporation of alkali ingredients to moderate pH levels. These alkalis may render the Alpha Hydroxy Acids ineffective (4) and potentially irritate the skin

Skin care and UV protection

April 20th, 2016

With Summer in the Southern Hemishpere behind us, now is the time to remember the value of using sunscreen throughout the year.

We focus too often on UVB, the sun’s burning rays that are strongest during the middle of the day in summer.

But UVA, the sun’s tanning and aging rays are all too often forgotten. Responsible for tanning, premature aging and also skin cancer, UVA is constant throughout the year and from sunrise to sunset.
